Chapter Six

The carriage ride took them outside the city and into the countryside. The snow was pristine and smoke curled lazily from houses scattered between the hills. The air had turned colder as well, but inside the carriage it was warm while the coach hobbled along gravel paths instead of cobblestone.

“Where are we going, Gideon?” Willa asked again, curiosity getting the best of her.

The carriage turned and he pulled the curtain on the window back to reveal his surprise.

“There,” he said, pointing.

In the midst of the snow and the hills and down a driveway where holly bushes with bright red berries stood out between the green leaves, there stood a small manor house with snowcapped roofs and each window seemed aglow with warm yellow light inviting them forward. Wreaths hung from each window and garlands wrapped around the white stone pillars by the front door. It was like something she read about in picture books and Sandy slowed the carriage by the front door.

“What is this place?” Willa asked in wonder.

“I purchased it for us, a cozy place outside the city where we can be alone,” Gideon explained. “There is no staff, I will cook and we will warm our feet all weekend. There is a pond out back where we can ice skate.”

“Isn’t that just for men?” Willa questioned as Gideon lifted her out of the coach.

“I have two pair of skates and this is my property,” he reminded her.

Willa loved how her body felt against his and he pressed his soft kisses on her lips.

“I don’t know how to skate,” she reminded him. Her feet settled in the deep snow when he put her down and Willa thought it lucky he’d told her wear boots.

“If you hold onto me, love, we’ll glide together,” Gideon promised. “There are nice stables and a lovely warm room out back for Sandy stocked with food. Though he will probably go into the town close by for some ale and music at the pub.”

Sandy trotted the horses around the house to take them and the coach to the stables while Gideon led Willa to the door and unlocked it with a brass key. A warm fire burned and there was already a tree set up and decorated. The light of the fire reflected off the ornaments. More garland with red bows hung from the stairs and Willa looked around in awe at the warm colors, the throws and the care he’d put into making this a home away from home for her. There was even a bookcase with a stack of books, with a chaise lounge and a table with a lamp close by for reading.

“What do you think of our little manor house?” Gideon asked gently.

Willa looked around in delight and impulsively wrapped her arms around his waist. “No one has ever done anything like this for me before.”

“Byron?” Gideon questioned.

“I loved him because he was like me, loved his books, loved his mathematics, and he went into everything with a level head, thinking precisely,” Willa said.
